ChatterBaby, the app that translates baby crying

Ucla has developed a mobile app called ChatterBaby that is able to identify when a baby is crying and help decode what he's trying to communicate. A tool for deaf and hard of hearing parents, but not only ...
When you become parents, one of the first things you learn very quickly is to interpret the crying of your child that can have several causes: hunger, pain, fear ... But for parents With hearing loss or deafness, knowing when a child is crying and why crying is a daily challenge. Existing devices that rely on cameras and microphones are not accurate enough to differentiate between game-related cries or crying.

ChatterBaby, a mobile application developed by the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), attempts to remedy this situation by using artificial intelligence to analyze a baby's crying and deduce three states: pain, hunger or the bad mood.

A free Android and iOS application

To create this program, researchers began by training algorithms from a database of more than 2,000 crying babies. Through learning, automatic, the software has integrated the meaning of the three types of crying corresponding to pain, hunger or whim. "The difference between hunger-related crying and bad mood is difficult. On the other hand, we were able to identify pain crying with 90% accuracy, "says Professor Ariana Anderson, who led the project.

Available free for Android and iOS smartphones, the ChatterBaby app also allows parents to anonymously record the crying of their babies so they can be analyzed and help improve AI. The ambition is that this application can help not only hearing-impaired parents, but also those who have their first child, or mothers with postpartum depression who may have difficulty grasping the meaning of their baby's crying.
